Associate Amanda Alasauskas has chosen Indiana University Dance Marathon as this month’s organization for ALG’s Year of Giving. Amanda has been involved with the organization since her college years and is so happy to be able to continue to give back. Read Amanda’s message about the organization below:
Indiana University Dance Marathon (IUDM) is the second largest student run philanthropy in the world and has raised over $40 million for Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis since its inception in 1991. It was founded to honor Ryan White, who died of AIDS which he contracted through a blood transfusion. He was treated at Riley, but ultimately lost his battle in 1990, in the spring before he had planned to attend IU. IUDM established the Ryan White Infectious Disease Center at Riley and has now fully funded three endowments for the hospital as a result of the money it as raised in the 30 years since its beginning. Now, 25% of donations go toward clinical expenses and 75% of donations support pediatric health research.
IUDM is the culmination of a year’s worth of events and fundraising efforts including a Gala, Summer Golf Outing, and a FT5K (which I was involved with naming, no big deal) all to raise money For The Kids (FTK!). The Big Event is a 36-hour dance marathon, where committee members and dancers spend 12-36 hours on their feet “standing for those who can’t.” It includes learning a 10-minute line dance, listening to Riley family stories and interacting with the kids, playing games, listening to live music, a Riley Kids talent show, and performances by student organizations. 2020 brought a lot of logistical challenges for IUDM, but it was still able to raise $2.9 million FTK. It raised $4.2 million in 2019.
I participated as a dancer for one year, and was a member of the Recruitment Committee for two years, where I was also the Events sub-committee chair. I remain active on IUDM’s Alumni Board. I am on the professional development committee, mentoring and providing a resource for Executive Committee members and sub-committee chairs with other alumni. IUDM truly provides a family for its members and changed my college experience.
If you would like to support IUDM, you can make donations by mail to Indiana University Dance Marathon, Indiana Memorial Union, Suite 572, Bloomington, IN 47405 or online at https://events.dancemarathon.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.donate&eventID=4474.
